It used to be that there were only one or two sites to look if you needed to look for a holiday rental on-line. Up until not too long ago, your only choices were websites such as VRBO or CyberRentals. These websites have existed since at least the late 1990s and generally dominated the industry.
The above websites are still around, but you have a many more options when looking for accommodations today. Web sites such as TripAdvisor or HomeAway or PerfectPlaces have cropped up, together with a lot of smaller, regional and hyper-local sites.
Almost without fail, the larger websites all have a similar amount of listed accommodations. There may be some regional differences every now and again, but more often than not the majority of web-sites will have a decent range from which to choose.
The challenge is not so much in having a large variety of rental accommodations from which to select, but picking the right rental. The main decision you will have to make is whether or not you want a rental that's managed and posted by the owner or one that's posted by a management company. The more recent online sites make this decision fairly easy, since many make this distinction reasonably obvious.
After you've narrowed it to one group or the other, you'll want to seriously consider the properties themselves. Not just the most apparent items like pics or features - those things you'll always want to consider. You will need to find out if the availability calendar has been modified lately. That's important because it demonstrates both a commitment to actively managing the property, as well as offering you an indication of how much time you'll gain or squander going back and forth trying to figure out if the property is available.
Before you make a final decision which homeowners or managers to approach, be sure that the home has received at least some reviews. Great reviews are useful to find, but don't discount the negative testimonials. If a bad critique incorporates a response particularly responding to the things pointed out in the evaluation, that's a fantastic sign. It shows the owner or manager is focusing and is making an effort in making the property better.
All reviews that are positive don't always indicate a great property. Testimonials can be faked. If a property offers all positive reviews, with no reference to any kind of problems whatsoever, be careful. Newer websites, like AirBnB make the process of identifying whether a critique is valid much simpler by tying the reviewers identity to Facebook or by including other sorts of social confirmation.
As a last step, assess the actual person you are talking with about your rental. Don't only question them about the rental itself. Ask them specific questions regarding the area where the rental is located, request restaurant ideas, get them to suggest activities, etc. In other words, make sure they are completely informed about both the property and region they represent. What you don't want is simply someone who's responding to inquiries. You want to correspond with someone who lives and works in the region.
